The Returned

Jeremy sure loves that damn raccoon.

I tried to have had this published before I shipped off on my honeymoon, but I stress out when it comes to travel, and I just ran out of time. Making sure I have everything becomes somewhat obsessive for me, I’m constantly concerned about leaving something important behind like my passport or boarding pass. I tend to check and recheck my bags not only before I leave, but all throughout the trip.

Erin and I spent the last two weeks in Italy, and each time we moved from one city to the next I was a ball of stress checking the closets and under the bed of our B&B’s to make sure we didn’t leave anything behind. God forbid we forget the Pert Plus. How will I be able to enjoy the Italian coast when I’ve got a case of dandruff?

Italy was amazing though, my obsessive behaviour notwithstanding. If you love paintings featuring Jesus and or the Virgin Mary I highly recommend you go. We spent a great deal of time in galleries (I absolutely loved seeing Michelangelo’s David in person) but also a lot of time eating and drinking wine in a country that really values relaxation and socializing. Chatting over a bottle of candlelit wine will be my fondest memory of the trip.

Still we’re happy to be back home in Canada, where we know the language and the only Jesus art is on the back of some nutter’s Ford Escape.

One of the snags of posting comics whenever we have free them is writing comics that reference previous comics. It’s something we like doing so much that I’d guess there are actually very few comics that aren’t connected to other strips. And why not, it’s a great way to build your audience. Be self-referential, write inside jokes, we know in 2016 audiences have long attention spans for payoffs that are slow and require a lot of reading.

Anyway, we recommend going back and reading the previous comic to fully appreciate our well crafted and totally accessible new strip.

Side Notes – Summer Movie Wrap Up /comic/2016/08/side-notes-summer-movie-wrap/ /comic/2016/08/side-notes-summer-movie-wrap/#respond Mon, 29 Aug 2016 04:18:04 +0000 /comic/?p=1885 As promised, we’ll be publishing some sub-episodes this summer while we’re on break. Gregg expresses his love for disaster movies, his appreciation for things named Cloverfield, and his complicated relationship with Ghostbuster 2016. Colin enlightens us on the Divergent series, explains how he came to watch Batman v Superman twice, and looks forward to movies with no name…literally.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – S01E07 /comic/2016/08/indiana-jones-kingdom-crystal-skull-s01e07/ /comic/2016/08/indiana-jones-kingdom-crystal-skull-s01e07/#respond Thu, 18 Aug 2016 02:35:41 +0000 /comic/?p=1881 It’s our season finale! And what a doozy we as we crunch the numbers and calculate how best to correct the 4th Indiana Jones film. Yes, the one with aliens. It’s like Close Encounters of Third Kind and George Lucas had a baby, and Steven Spielberg was left to raise the child on his own.

Our guests for the season wrap-up are two noted nerds, comic store owners Danica LeBlanc and Brandon Schatz from Variant Edition. Together we try to solve the essential question…why are there gophers in this movie? Well, that and a few other questions, mostly surrounding what the heck anyone was doing ever. Also, Gregg spends a great deal of time defending Shia LaBeouf.

Huge thanks to everyone who made our first season a success! Thanks so much for listening, we’ll see you again in the fall.

Prometheus – S01E06 /comic/2016/08/prometheus-s01e06/ /comic/2016/08/prometheus-s01e06/#respond Tue, 02 Aug 2016 02:45:07 +0000 /comic/?p=1875 Prometheus is a very divisive movie. Some fans triumph its beauty, world building and willingness to tackle some big themes. Others bemoan its confusing script and the high rate of baffling decisions made by its main characters.

In other words, it was a movie made for this podcast!

Scott C. Bourgeois, formerly of The Unknown Studio fame, joins us along with returning guest Erin Beever to unravel this confounding sci-fi masterpiece. We jump into the Med-Pod, perform abdominal surgery on Prometheus, pulling out all its entrails and then trying in vain to put everything back better than when we started.

Ghostbusters II – S01E04 /comic/2016/07/ghostbusters-ii-s01e04/ /comic/2016/07/ghostbusters-ii-s01e04/#respond Mon, 04 Jul 2016 02:55:36 +0000 /comic/?p=1851 We ain’t afraid of no ghosts, particularly because this movie didn’t have a whole lot of them. Did have a lot of slime, though.

Andrea Beca and Lauren Dary from the podcast That’s So Maven stop by to breakdown, analyze and ultimately fix 1989’s Ghostbusters II. We chat about our dislike for dancing toasters, our desire for more scares and the ways in which the movie’s score made our ears sad. Oh, and the topic of Ghostbusters 2016 comes up, though we can’t imagine why. Nothing to talk about there, right?

Haunted

It was a blazin’ hot weekend in Edmonton, when I wasn’t colouring this comic I was outside enjoying the sun. Mowing the lawn, walking the dog, BBQing, going for iced cream…you know, summer stuff.

Trouble is, as much as we love the sun, the sun doesn’t really love us back, does it? The sun described how much it didn’t care for me with a brilliant, crimson red sunburn along my forearms, nose and neck. I look forward to trying to sleep tonight while my sheets feel like sand paper against my skin.

I have doused myself in heavily aloe, which is the way you deal with a sunburn when you’re too stupid to apply sunscreen before you go outside. But hey, instead of feeling like my skin is being flayed by a potato peeler, now I just feel really sticky. That’s an upgrade in my books.

Anyway, enjoy the new comic, see you again soon!
